Fox Glacier – Local Attractions

Fox Glacier Township offers a perfect base to explore all the numerous natural wonders that are in our backyard.People-on-Fox-Glacier-250x205

Fox Glacier is the largest and longest of the West Coast Glaciers, grinding its way from the heart of the Southern Alps down into temperate rainforest just 12km from the Tasman Sea.  There are excellent views of New Zealand’s highest peaks, Mt Cook/Aoraki and Mt Tasman from Fox township. You can explore Fox Glacier by taking a guided walk with Fox Glacier Guiding who have been operating since 1928.

There are several options available.  You can take an easy walk to the bottom of the Glacier with experienced guides who will share the history of the Glacier with you.  For the more adventuress take a Heli-hike which combines the thrill of a helicopter flight and the opportunity to explore the ice caves and remote parts of the Glacier.

The other option is to self drive yourself to the car park at Fox Glacier and do the Fox Glacier Valley walk to the terminal face which is approximately 1 hour return.

Take a scenic flight over Mt Cook and the Glaciers with optional snow landings with several of the Helicopter Companies operating out of Fox Glacier.

Nearby Lake Matheson is renowned for its reflections of New Zealand’s highest mountains.

Lake Matheson has an excellent walking track around it for all fitness levels. Take anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours to complete the round trip where there are several viewing points for that perfect photo.  Take time to watch and listen to the bird life.

After your walk enjoy refreshments at Matheson Cafe, an award winning cafe boasting unsurpassed views of Mt Cook/Aoraki and Mt Tasman.  Purchase a souvenir at ReflectioNZ Gift Gallery.

A short drive west of Fox Glacier is Gillespies Beach which was an original Gold Mining Settlement.  Here you can take a walk to the Seal Colony at Galway Beach which is approx 3 hours return.  Seals congregate here during the Winter months.  The remoteness and ruggedness of this area is spectacular.

Make Fox Glacier your base or starting point for the Copland Track.  This 6-8 hour tramp each way (2 days) takes you to the famous Welcome Flat natural hot pools. Transport is available from Fox Glacier Township.

Finally at night take a walk through a grotto of ferns and rain forest on the Minniehaha Track located 200 metres from our motel and you will be rewarded by a spectacular show of Glow Worms, especially on a clear, dark night.

We hope you enjoy all that is on offer in Fox Glacier and your stay is a memorable one.
